The process of exterior painting follows a few general steps.

  • First, you need to choose a paint type and color. Your choice of paint will depend on your siding, personal taste, and, when applicable, HOA regulations.

  • Second, acquire your supplies.  Paint, tape, ladders of appropriate height, and the like.

  • Once you have your paint and supplies, you'll need to prepare your house for painting. This includes protecting windows and nearby plants.

  • With your color chosen, and your house prepared, you should be ready to start painting.

Exterior house painting is rarely the work of a day, and chances are you have a lot on your plate. Plus, there are safety concerns to think about. If your house is more than one level, not only will it take longer to paint the exterior, but you also have to act with caution and have the right tools such as tall ladders or scaffolding.

Painting the Outside of Your House FAQs

Will the smell be a problem?  While exterior paints today are unlikely to be toxic, the smell can still be strong and bothersome. It would be best to shut all windows during painting and for a day or two after we're done.

How long will it take?

he time required depends on the size of your home and the scope of the work. We’ll provide an accurate estimate during your consultation.

Will my plants get ruined?
We'll do our best to avoid getting paint on plants or trampling them. Shrubs and other plants by the house can be covered with a cloth or plastic before we start painting.

Will you cover the windows?
The simple answer is yes. It's general practice to at least tape around windows and other spots that need to be protected from paint. If we're spraying paint on, and in some other circumstances, we'll fully cover the windows.
